Description
Oats are a cool season, annual grass that many producers use as a early season cover crop option.
It works well in mixes with other species as a fall cover. In Northern Regions, with a likelihood of winter kill, oats can be used to help reduce risk from the carbon penalty on spring Corn Acres. Oats have a known contribution to mycorrhizae fungi development and a fiborous root system that can reach depths of 80” within the soil profile.
Winterkill should be expected north of Winter Zone 7. Plant at high end rates if planning on weed suppression the following spring.
