Cereal rye is known for being the best cereal crop at retaining residual N. Robust spring growth has allowed for operations to successfully suppress weeds late into the spring. It also has been known to suppress many small seeded broadleafs because of its allelopathic properties.
Termination is most common while vegetative in the spring through chemical control or alternative methods (rolling, mowing, or crimping) after boot stage.
